I had to learn it the hard way: we need community.

Let me tell you about my abstract artwork called “Healing in Community” currently on display at @basislager.leipzig - part 1 ✨

I was lucky enough to design two windows at the coworking space and find it very fitting. People working together on their big dreams, supporting each other and maybe also sometimes struggling with each other.

That’s what this colorful, childlike piece is all about. It shows a world of little figurines that are building things with stones, tearing some things down, sitting together, discussing and problem solving.

We’re in community not because it’s easy but because it’s deeply wired into us.

If you’re there, spend some time looking at the painting and see if you can find yourself in your current circumstances. Are you the one sitting at the table? Building? Tearing down? Discussing? Or maybe you’re the cat observing everyone else 😅

Stay tuned for part 2 where I talk about the second painting and how the two paintings fit together. Spoiler: it’s about finding the right people and what belonging and fitting in has to do with all of this.

I got the opportunity to show two of my paintings and a poem at @basislager.leipzig, designing two of their windows. The theme of the collaboration is COMMUNITY and so I chose:

✨ a yellow painting called “no matter what they say, you’re worthy of love and belonging” inspired by @brenebrown and her research on belonging vs. fitting in

✨ a very special painting called “healing in community” that reminds me of a wimmelbild, with so many different little figures to discover

✨ and the accompanying poem “healing in community” about how hard it is to figure things out together but that it’s the only way

Give yourself permission to become yourself and then find the people who will cheer you on and dump the rest.

Allow yourself to lose the people who only benefited from you playing small, people-pleasing and having no boundaries.

You’re allowed to design a life that fits who you are and what’s important to you.

Your path will look different from everyone else’s and that’s a beautiful thing! You’re not behind!

I hope it brings you as much joy as it brought me making this.

The bold pink and red remind you that it’s not just a nice thought BUT that we really do need to give ourselves grace because otherwise we get stuck.

Otherwise we might never go where we want to go because we’re being way too harsh on ourselves.
